The fireworks were never the ending.
They were the exclamation point in the middle of a night that began with a vision, unfolded through four completely different feature stories and finished beneath the checkered flag.
MVT Fireworks Night brought families, longtime supporters and first-time visitors together at Vado Speedway Park on Saturday, July 11. Royal Jones welcomed the crowd to the playground his vision helped create. Mesilla Valley Transportation supplied the engine behind that vision, the drivers supplied the courage, and the Vado faithful brought the Diamond in the Desert to life.
Then the clay got its turn.
Riggs charges from the sixth row
Cale Riggs established the theme early: starting position was only the beginning.
The No. 96 charged from sixth to win its Hulsey Racing Legends heat, then began the 20-lap feature from 11th.
Riggs avoided the opening trouble, worked through a field filled with drivers making forward progress and reached the lead with 13 laps remaining. Restarts and traffic repeatedly gave the field opportunities to answer.
Nobody could.
Riggs completed the heat-and-feature sweep and earned his 13th victory in 114 Vado Legends feature starts.
The entire podium came from outside the first four rows. RJ Garay advanced from tenth to second, while Kyle Burnette drove from ninth to third.

- Kyle Burnette — No. 32 — started ninth
Three laps changed everything
Francisco Knight appeared ready to erase one of the biggest unfinished stories of his season.
The No. 665 controlled nearly the entire Extreme Landscaping USRA Stock Car feature from the high side. Championship leader Jonathan Burton remained close enough to apply pressure, but Knight continued answering every restart.
Then, with three laps remaining, the race changed.
An apparent mechanical problem brought Knight to a stop at the top of turn three. The lead suddenly belonged to Burton.
The trophy did not.
Burton still had Justin Garrett, Sherman Barnett and the rest of the field stacked behind him for a final green-white-checkered restart. The No. 00B fired cleanly, protected the lead and finished the job.
Knight endured a brutal ending. Burton delivered a championship-level response.

The Borderland sky comes alive
After two features filled with charges and reversals, the racetrack paused and the sky took center stage.
MVT Fireworks Night illuminated the Borderland above the Diamond in the Desert. Families watched together, first-time visitors made themselves heard, and veteran fans welcomed them into the Vado racing family.
The moment also carried a promise: the fireworks were intermission, not the conclusion.
The sky had received its turn.
The clay still had the final word.
Vargas kicks down the Late Model door
Fourteen-year-old Luke Vargas entered MVT Fireworks Night with a complicated Vado résumé.
He was already a feature winner in the Pure Stocks. In the Anthony Sosa Roofing Late Models, however, the numbers told a different story:
Thirty-one feature starts.
Eight podiums.
Twenty-two top-five finishes.
Zero victories.
That changed in start No. 32.
Vargas started second, drove the No. 777X into the lead and handled every restart without allowing the significance of the moment to overwhelm the race itself.
When the checkered flag appeared, Vargas had become a winner in two different divisions at Vado Speedway Park.
This was not his first trip to Victory Lane.
It was the night he finally arrived there in a Late Model.

McCutcheon earns the final ticket
Thirty-four Mendoza Law Firm USRA Modifieds created the largest field of MVT Fireworks Night.
Before the main event could begin, the B-Main placed a simple line between survival and elimination: eighth owned the final transfer; ninth went home.
Kohl McCutcheon started sixth, won the 12-lap last-chance race and transferred the No. 522 into the feature.
The B-Main trophy represented more than another checkered flag. McCutcheon had survived the elimination race and earned the right to join the final field beneath the lights.
The four-wide salute brings the night together
Before the final feature, the Modified field filled the racetrack for a four-wide salute.
Drivers honored the fans who filled the grandstands, the crews who spent the week preparing every machine, the families who sacrificed alongside them and the partners who helped make the night possible.
The engines supplied the soundtrack. The American flag flew above them. The entire Borderland racing community shared the same racetrack for one final moment before competition resumed.
Then the rows tightened.
The visors came down.
The final 25 laps began.
The Professor passes the final exam
The Gallardo family had already won three of the five Modified heat races. Fito Gallardo won Heat 2, Jake Gallardo won Heat 3, and Peyton Gallardo won Heat 5.
Jake completed the statement.
Starting fifth, the Professor drove the No. J17 into the lead and began stacking together clean, consistent laps. A caution with ten remaining erased his advantage.
Jake answered.
Another yellow with two laps remaining erased it again and created one final green-white-checkered examination.
Jake answered again.
Gallardo controlled the restart and drove away with the final trophy of MVT Fireworks Night. Fito advanced from seventh to second. Behind them, Christy Barnett charged from 11th and won a three-wide drag race for third by eight-thousandths of a second over Peyton Gallardo.

One night, five winning stories
MVT Fireworks Night produced five different paths to a checkered flag:
- Cale Riggs charged through both his heat and feature.
- Kohl McCutcheon survived the elimination line and earned the final transfer.
- Jonathan Burton inherited an opportunity but still had to execute.
- Luke Vargas transformed 31 previous attempts into a breakthrough.
- Jake Gallardo answered every late restart and closed the show.
The evening also included birthday celebrations throughout the grandstands and a respectful remembrance of Tucson racer Rick Catlin, whose passing had been shared that morning by Minks Motorsports. Vado Speedway Park sends its condolences to Rick’s family, friends, fellow racers and everyone at Minks Motorsports.
The fireworks brought people through the gates.
The racing gave them a reason to return.

The next event following MVT Fireworks Night was Meet the Drivers Night #1 on Saturday, July 18.
After fireworks introduced families to the spectacle of Vado Speedway Park, Meet the Drivers Night brought them closer to the people responsible for it. Fans stepped onto the front straightaway, collected autographs, took photographs and met the drivers before five divisions returned to the clay for feature racing.
Christy Barnett, Robert Dominguez, Jaydon Barnes, Cale Riggs and Fito Gallardo carried the next chapter into Victory Lane.
