Before feature racing, Vado Speedway Park opened the front straightaway—and the distance between the grandstands and the pit area disappeared.
Families stood beside the machines. Kids collected autographs and souvenirs. Drivers who had been car numbers at a distance became names, faces and somebody to pull for.
Then those same people climbed back into their race cars.
Christy Barnett turned three of four starts into victories and completed the Super Truck sweep from sixth.
Robert Dominguez stayed inside a Pure Stock fight that kept changing leaders, then took command when the laps were running out.
At only 15 years old—before Arizona would even allow him to drive alone on the street—Jaydon Barnes turned Vado feature start number six into victory number one.Cale Riggs led all 20 Stock Car laps while Jonathan Burton charged from tenth and tried to take the final four away from him.
Fito Gallardo drove from ninth to first, and Rocko came from 11th to make the B-Mod finish a Gallardo one-two.
Those are the official results.
What Saturday created was harder to place in a box score.
The autograph in a fan’s hand and the car beneath the checkered flag now belonged to the same person.
