Vado Speedway Park’s annual Labor Day Weekend Doubleheader was held this past weekend on Friday and Saturday night with the 360 Wing Sprint Desert Series as the headliner both nights. Caleb Saiz and JT Imperial posted up in Rio Grande Waste Services Victory Lane after their Friday and Saturday night features respectively to cap off a great weekend at the track.

The S.H. Automotive Pure Stock feature event was up first and after multiple cautions, plus a lengthy red flag period for Diego Alvarado, who got upside down in turn two, the event was shortened with Robert Dominguez racing from his 6th starting spot to pick up his first ever feature win for his efforts. Dominguez was followed to the finish line by 14th starting Jeremy DuBois, 12th starting Raymundo Lopez, Drew Cassidy and Mel Romero when the time limit expired.

Sean Salazar continued his winning ways in the INEX Legend feature event and raced to his third straight Hulsey Racing Legend Car feature win in dramatic fashion for the second week in a row. Last week, he had to rally from dead last to get the win and tonight he nipped race leader Aydan Saunders at the stripe in a photo finish to get the thrilling win at the conclusion of the 20-lap event. Saunders ran second with Josh Jackson third, just ahead of Jacob Masterson, who started 13th and Zach Rodriguez, who rounded out the top five.

Third in the feature order was the POWRi 360 Wing Sprint Car Desert Series 25-lap feature event and after a race-long battle for the lead Caleb Saiz edged Colton Hardy for the victory to kick start the weekend for the Hal Burns Racing Team. Saiz started on the pole and as mentioned, lead the majority of the event, but not without heavy pressure from Hardy, who was working the extreme outside of the speedway trying to build momentum to try to sweep by Saiz for the lead. Caleb was strong out front though and was able to hold off Hardy’s challenges and race to the victory for his efforts. Hardy ran a solid second with Lorne Wofford starting and finishing third. Rick Ziehl advanced from 10th to 4th in the finishing order and Don Grable rounded out the top five finishers.

Mike Rosales hopped behind the wheel of the Pete Vargas-owned #777 Super Truck for the weekend and didn’t take long to shake the rust off as he raced from his 11th starting spot in the main event to the lead and to victory in his first night behind the wheel of the truck this season. As Rosales was working his way through the field, Sherman Barnett, Jim Wallace and Luis Esquivel were battling out front until Rosales was able to charge by to take the top spot and race away from the field to the win. Barnett crossed the finish line second with Wallace nipping Esquivel for third. Dawson Manicki rounded out the top five finishers.

Mercedes Abercombie raced to her fourth straight Late Model victory on Friday night, besting 15th starting Jeff Schildmeyer the checkered flag during the 25-lap feature event. Abercrombie, who started 8th, raced hard with Shane and Eric McNutt early just behind race leader Devin Smith until Smith encountered mechanical issues under the hood of his #004 and exited the race, handing the top spot to Abercrombie, who then ran away during the remaining laps for the victory. Behind the leader, Schildmeyer and 11th starting Philip Houston were working their way forward and appeared in the top five before the mid-point of the race and went on to finish second and third respectively for their efforts. Eric McNutt edged Jeremy Stamper for fourth at the line.

The Vado Speedway Park will be back in action to conclude the Labor Day weekend when the POWRi 360 Desert Wing Sprint Car Series makes its final stop of the season on Saturday, September 3rd. Gates open at 5 and racing begins at 7:30.
