Saunders, Cain and Carney Capture Vado Weekend Sweeps

The Vado Speedway Park in Vado, NM was back in action for the track’s traditional Memorial Day Weekend Doubleheader on Saturday and Sunday, May 28th and 29th with the first visit by the POWRi 360 Winged Desert Series as the headliner.  

Saturday night, the first feature of the night was the S.H. Automotive Pure Stocks with Jeremy DuBois racing from his 16th starting position to best the field in the 15-lap event. DuBois, who has had a pair of rough weeks in a row, rebounded well with a dominant victory over 4th starting Chris Dominguez, who finished a career best second. Sharrii Minks raced from 15th up to 3rd, followed by 18th starting Michael Hartman and 17th starting Raymundo Lopez in the top five. 

Sunday, 21st starting Michael Hartman looked as if he was going to finish second in the feature event, but race leader Miguel Rincon spun coming off of turn for as he was about to take the checkered, allowing Hartman to race by for the improbable victory. 11th starting Chris Mijares bested 17th starting Chris Dominguez, 19th starting Jeremy DuBois and 20th starting Reymundo Lopez for the win.  

The Hulsey Racing INEX Legends feature was the second main of the night and Aydan Saunders charged from his 16th starting spot to top the 20-lap event ahead of 14th starting Zach Rodriguez and 18th starting Mike Money. Saunders, the 2021 Legend Track Champion worked his way through traffic with ease and raced to the victory. 

Sunday, Aydan Saunders raced to his second Legend victory of the weekend by racing from his 10th starting spot to beat Dave Smith to the finish line to sweep the weekend. Sean Salazar beat teammate Josh Jackson to the line in third with 14th starting Zach Rodriguez rounding out the top five.  

The POWRi 360 Wing Sprint Car Desert Series 25-lap main event saw El Paso, TX racer John Carney II race from the outside of the front row into the lead and drive off for his first ever win at Vado for his efforts. 2021 305 Sprint Track Champion Lorne Wofford raced from 9th up to a runner up finish over pole sitter Brett Becker, who raced to a third-place finish. Josh Grady raced from 7th up to fourth and Don Grable charged from 13th up to a top five finish. 

Sunday, John Carney II continued his winning ways by racing by early race leader Jesse Baker into the top spot and working through lapped traffic with ease for his second straight win, completing the weekend sweep. Baker held off Caleb Saiz for a solid runner up finish with Don Grable and Dylan Harris rounding out the top five.  

The Hacienda Carpet & Tile USRA B-Mod main event was the fourth on the schedule with 13th starting Christy Barnett charging from her 7th row starting spot to claim the victory over rookie racer Peyton Gallardo, who raced to a career best runner up finish. Justin Allen worked from his 15th starting spot up to finish third at the line with Hector Barraza and John Carney rounding out the top five. 

Sunday, Christy Barnett raced from her 13th starting spot to overhaul mid-race leader Israel Ortega into the lead with only a few laps remaining, but a green-white-checkered dash to the checkered allowed 9th starting Peyton Gallardo race to the outside of Barnett to take the lead on the final lap and race off to his first feature win in his rookie season. Lucas Ward was able to race from his 18th starting spot up to second at the checkered with Ortega hanging on for third at the line.  

The final event of the night was the Anthony Sosa Roofing Late Model feature event and saw Josh Cain race from 19th up to the lead and drive away from the field for the worst-to-first run. Cain sliced his way through traffic to best 17th starting Mercedes Abercrombie, who charged from her 9th row starting spot to come home second, ahead of Eric McNutt, Devan Smith and Jeff Schildmeyer in the top five. 

Sunday, Josh Cain didn’t have to work as hard as he did the night before as he raced from 19th to the feature win. Tonight, he started 3rd and after a brief three-wide battled with Philip Houston and Mercedes Abercrombie for the top spot, he was able to drive away out front for the second night in a row to complete the weekend sweep. Houston ran second with Abercrombie besting Eric McNutt and Devan Smith in the top five.

The Vado Speedway Park will be back in action this coming Saturday, June 4th with another Hot City Nights event. Gates open at 5 and racing begins at 7:30.
