Vado Speedway Park opening Saturday after 14-month closure

After about 14 months closed due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Vado Speedway Park is back in business for its season opener on Saturday, March 20.

Large entertainment venues were not allowed to operate until recently in New Mexico. Doña Ana County is currently at the Yellow Level on the state’s Red to Green Framework, meaning such venues can now operate at 25% of the maximum outdoor capacity.

"We will be at 25 percent, which I would take rather than being closed," track owner Royal Jones said. "We haven't been open since January. People are excited and looking forward to coming out to the races."

Park General Manager Chris Stepan said the venue had a plan to return when the county map updated on Feb. 24, but Doña Ana County turned red, restricting entertainment venues from operating.
