Just over one week ago the Southern New Mexico Speedway announced the January 19-22, 2017 Short Track Shootout at the 1/3rd mile Las Cruces oval. When the news was first released co-promoters SNMS General Manager Rue Stone and local racer Fito Gallardo has not even given the event a name yet. Now the event, set to kick off with an open practice on Thursday, January 19th, has a name and the promotional pair tabbed veteran race official Kelley Carlton as the Race Director for that event.

Update: The Short track Shootout has been postponed to March 9-12, 2017.

“We feel like getting Kelley involved with this event was important. We are running the same divisions as they are at the Wild West Shootout and we will have the same rule set as well. We aren’t actually tied to the Wild West Shootout but we will be running the same divisions and using the same rules for each class. And now we will have the same guy running the shows. I know that racers like that kind of consistency. They can just make their way over here after Arizona and run for some more money. They will know what to expect and won’t have to make many changes to their cars.” commented Stone.

“I am truly humbled to have been given the opportunity to be a part of these events. It means the world to me for these guys to ask me to direct their events. I am really looking forward to it. I have never been to Southern New Mexico but I have worked with Rue and Royal previously at El Paso and I know that they care about the racers and race fans that attend their tracks. So I believe we are in for an excellent event all 3 days. I am really excited about it.” added Carlton.

The Short Track Shootout will feature three days of racing beginning with a $3,000-to-win Super Late Model show headlining both Friday and Saturday’s programs. The Sunday finale will see the Super Late Models chasing a $5000 winner’s purse. Also in action will be USRA sanctioned Open Wheel Modifieds and X-Mods. The USRA Modifieds will earn national points as well as SNMS points all 3 nights. The USRA Modifieds will pay $2000 to win both Friday and Saturday while the Sunday finale will pay $3000 to the winner. Both Friday and Saturday the X-Mods feature will pay $500 to win and the finale pays $1000 to the victor. The X-Mods will also earn both USRA and SNMS points all 3 nights.
