Jake Gallardo won the USRA Modified feature.

Tonight at Southern New Mexico Speedway we honor Officer Chavez of the Hatch Police Department and say thank you to every first responder for their sacrifice on a daily basis. The USRA Dirt Modifieds finally back in action and it was set to be a slick one. The Super trucks, Street Stocks, Mini Sprints, and legends also joined the racing action tonight for some fun under the lights.

Peter Piper Pizza Super trucks rolled onto the speedway first tonight as usual and it was 15 laps set on the board. A caution on lap would end the 33 of Duffey night early, as the 10 would also go to the back after getting spun around. A restart with the 6 of Walton Kyle Sr leading the 01 of Dave Deetz but things were bound to get hairy. Deetz would run under the 6 for a few laps but 4 in with 11 to go the 01 finally making his move and shooting to the lead. The 44 of Christy Barnett was also on the move as she would slide her way into third already in this one. Still 9 to go and the 44 already on the bumper of the 6 for second! Christy making quick work of the gap here. Coming to the line for 6 to go the 44 would shoot to the outside and steal second just barely over the 6. Christy getting lucky here though because too far back from the 01 but the caution would fly. With 6 to go the 01 of Deetz leads the 44 and 6 back to green. Christy going back to the bottom in this restart and it wouldn’t take long because on the hammer into turn 3 and she would lead it clean. With 5 to go Christy would be on a pull but it was the 82 of Sherman Barnett digging his way into third after starting near the rear of the field! The 01 would get himself back into fighting contention with two to go but could never make it happen tonight. As the checkered flag flew it was the 44 of Christy Barnett taking yet another win on the 2016 season in the super truck. Strong run for Dr. Dave Deetz tonight as he brings it home in second. Rounding out the podium was the 82 of Sherman Barnett.

Rockin and Rollin mini sprints were up next and 12 laps for these rockets tonight. The 3s of Sal Gomez would lead early from the pole but mechanical issue for him would succeed the lead to the 11K of Tyler Congleton. The G3 of Melissa Gorham was into second and she would never back of her charge for the lead. The 11K and the G3 would pull from the field as Gorham just sat in-patient second waiting for any slip from Congleton. That slip would come with 4 to go as Gorham would bottom slide the inside for the lead as they exited turn 2! Melissa Gorham would take the lead from the 11K there and never be challenged again. As the checkered dropped it was the G3 of Melissa Gorham pulling ahead and showing the boys how it’s done. The 11K of Tyler Congleton sits in second and the 20 of Ricky Holden rounds out the top 3.

The USRA Sun Valley Hardware Street Stocks would get off to a wild start tonight as the top 3 would go three wide for the lead and even wider deep in the pack! The 51 of Kenny McCoy with the lead early and making the drive to the front quickly. The 36 of Mims and the 11 of Everage both trying to go three wide again but the 44JT of Torres and 0 of Turner coming to play as well. A total of six cars that could take the lead at any moment only 2 laps in!! McCoy would hold steady up front with the 44Jt of Jaime Torres moving into second after going almost 4 wide but with 17 to go the caution would fly. Torres would be all over McCoy on the restart and it was a duel in the desert all the way around. The 07 of Flores would come charging up to their bumpers with 15 to go but unable to get around, as the track was full. With 14 to go Torres would finally find his mark and never slow down again. Could have closed the curtains and called it a night at that point but Donovan Flores trying to make things interesting. A caution with 9 to go would slow the momentum of the 07 and Jaime Torres was in the clear. Donovan Flores would stay on the top on the restart and it would cost him a lot of ground t the field as the bottom finally came around. The 51 McCoy would get back inside the 07 and they would battle for the last 5 laps. As they swapped positions the 0 of Lloyd Turner back inside to make it a three way battle for second! Flores would find the high side groove again as his tires heated up but the 44Jt of Jaime Torres too far ahead. It’s the 44JT of Jaime Torres winning two nights in a row and making it look easy! The 07 of Flores had found the groove again but not enough time in this one. The 0 of Lloyd Turner comes from way back late to round out the top 3.

Casa Nissan Legends was an all out brawl from the get go tonight as the 17 of John McDaniel shot straight to the front from outside row 2. The 37A of Alex Esquivel was all over him quick but the 43 of Derek Demartino working his way through the field after just 2 laps and looking for the lead. After 5 the 17 was still holding off the 43 like a seasoned pro but it was battle for the books. The 43 would go high and low and then back high just trying everything he could. Demartino finally finding the bottom side in 4 and to the lead he went! McDaniel not done yet though and back on the bumper to battle. With 9 to go Demartino was still leading but McDaniel was not giving up as he had a towrope attached to the rear bumper of the 43. With 8 to go the caution would fly and the field came charging right back. The 237 of Steven Arellano would dart into second from the outside and be all over the 43 for the lead. It would be a bumper to bumper follow fest for the last laps as the 17 sat in second and fought off numerous attacks from the field. As the checkered flag waved it was the 43 of Derek Demartino getting it done in style, holding off the 237 of Steven Arellano. The 902 of Mike Zuloaga with a last lap charge on the 17 to steal the third spot away and the McDaniel rounding out the top 4.

The time had finally arrived! USRA Dirt Modifieds were rocking and rolling chomping at the bit. The 111 of Bumper Jones would lead the opening circuits with a challenge from the 44 quickly! The 44 of Christy Barnett would shoot to the high side on lap three and overshooting one by just a hair. She would fall back to fourth as the 07 of Donovan Flores gets his way into second. The 07 would capitalize on the situation and start to work on the 111! Only 4 laps in Donovan Flores would find the money spot and shoot to the lead around the outside. Into third though was the J17 of Jake Gallardo on a drag tonight! Only 2 more laps would have the J17 working on the 111 and into second goes Jake. Only 7 laps complete and caution would fly again but this restart would work out in bumpers favor. It was the 111 into second over the J17 and they run nose and nose again. The J17 and 111 getting together as they both try to handle the same piece of real-estate at the same time! That wont work and Jones goes flying to the outside groove! It works like the hardest slide job of all time and Bumper has Flores held off. Flores and Jones having to get out of the throttle though and Jake Gallardo to the lead with a dolphin dive! J17 with a spectacular move to the front there. The 111 would hold onto second after all that but a smoking left rear would mean trouble was on the way. With 13 to go the 111 was holding off a hard fighting Donovan Flores but the tire wouldn’t hold and boom went the hopes of winning tonight. The caution comes out with 13 to go and J17 now leads 07 once again. A few more cautions would give other drivers chances to move through the field and with 10 to go it was already the G17 into top 4! The 44 of Barnett running third but she was soon to have company. A clean restart would have the J17 back away again as the field went to battling the G17 wasting no time and into third with 6 to go! Flores now the only thing between him and his son but Christy Barnett still right there if he slips. With 2 to go it was obvious Jake was going to pull away with this one but the second place battle was far from over. The 07 was running the high side and the G17 moved into the middle of the track where he was moving and grooving. J17 way ahead but as the 07 takes the white he has a bumper full of Fito Gallardo! The 07 holds onto the highline into turn 3 and Fito Gallardo looks to the low side on the gas! Fito Gallardo gonna let it slide out through 4 and Donovan Flores with nowhere to go! Flores bumps him in the rear but it’s already to late in this one. After driving all the way to Kansas yesterday to get rained out and then flying all the way back today just to go racing tonight, the J17 of Jake Gallardo won yet another main event tonight but the pass of the night goes to Fito Gallardo through turn 4 to secure the second position. A solid run from Donovan Flores tonight as he rounds out the podium.

If you missed tonight’s memorial race for officer Jose Chavez then you missed a good one! Don’t make the same mistake next weekend as we go racing once again! The gates open at 5:30 with racing starting at 7:45.
